On 3 May 2008, Burma, also known as Myanmar, suffered devasting losses from Cyclon Nargis which struck early Satuday, May 3, 2008. Initial reports, just two days after the storm struck have estimated 22,000 perished and 40,000 missing and leaving over a million people homeless. The United Nations estimates that "hundreds of thousands" of people in Burma are in need of help due to the wind, rain and sea surge that swept across the vast Irrawaddy delta region and destroyed much of the country's heartland and largest city, Rangoon, also known as Yangon.
